Should they stay or should they go

Both the US and Canada have been talking of extending their time in Afghanistan and maybe even sending over reinforcements to bolster their efforts. (NOTE: Canada saying they will not be extending or adding to their current combat efforts but adding or extending for peacekeeping/rebuilding.)

With this comes the floods of people complaining & crying, that it’s a waste of taxpayer’s money, a waste of resources, and a waste of courageous, hard working, patriotic soldiers. This isn’t just coming from everyday citizens but the likes of Jack Layton saying something along the lines, “We have to bring our men & women home, and stop wasting taxpayer’s money. We need to think of OUR people first.”

Before I go on any further I want to make it clear that I am by no means a Stephen Harper supporter, nor am I pro war (quite the opposite actually) but I do believe that pulling out to quick is a bad thing (TWSS). With conflicts escalating in neighbouring Pakistan and Iran, showing a commitment to what we started in Afghanistan and completing what we set out to do may help deter others from committing similar crimes.

To think that there wouldn’t be a backlash if we were to just walk away from the mission is ludicrous (especially in the US), which is why I like what Obama’s doing. He showing his nation’s commitment to the efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan but also initiating peace talks around the globe. Walking away now the entire North America would look like dogs running with the tails between the legs.

I say send reinforcements, add to your numbers, and do a clean sweep of Afghanistan before all of the naysayers get their wish and the government pulls the plug; letting all of our fallen brother’s die in vain.
